What Is Ithmid Kohl?

Ithmid is a traditional type of kohl used around the eyes. It is usually prepared as a fine, dark powder and applied with a small kohl applicator.

Traditional kohl is still used today in some Muslim communities and is available in various forms. However, products sold under the name Ithmid may differ, so the name alone does not guarantee that a product is genuine.

What Does the Sunnah Say About Ithmid Kohl?

Several narrations mention the virtues of Ithmid. In a hadith narrated by Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

“Use Ithmid for kohl, for it clears the vision and grows the hair (eyelashes).”

This narration is reported in Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith 3878. Islamweb also discusses narrations about the virtues of Ithmid in its fatwa, “The Virtue of Ithmid Kohl.”

According to the fatwa, the hadith about Ithmid’s virtues was authenticated by the hadith scholar Al-Albani.
